this podcast,

was born out of many conversations we’ve had about scary circumstances and scary people and the considerations of power dynamics, social, racial and economic justice that are often left out.

two social workers walk into a haunted bar…

Who would have thought a course on the intellectual & historical foundations of social work would be the birthplace of a true crime podcast? Prob no one, but here we are. One day, Akshi (she/they) asked the class if anyone would be down to go on a haunted pub crawl and, naturally, Shaena (she/her) was like “um yes absolutely me.” On this tour, we learned about a female serial killer that had a sinister partnership with a local mortuary. There were so many unanswered questions about the role of capitalism/death industry: WTF happened to Linda? What were the broader implications of this story? The convo ended with “we should start a podcast lol.”

A year later, we actualized that vision and are grateful every day for the support of our friends, family and interested strangers that allow us to continue.

launched fall of 2020,

Unpacking the Eerie is a passion project created to merge the intersections of our morbid fascinations with our deeply held values.

If you’re like us, you’re into some dark ass shit. You’ve spent hours consuming creepy stories sometimes rooted in reality others rooted in the unknown. You also care deeply about collective liberation and consuming said content often leaves you feeling the ick. OR maybe you’re someone who historically couldn’t consume said content because of that ick. Either way, this podcast was created to bridge that gap. We hope that when you listen, you’ll experience the feels, the enjoyment, the horror and interludes of comedic relief that we do.
